Students work in teams to plan a project by gathering information, analyzing the situation, and preparing and presenting a complete project plan to solve a problem or achieve a goal of an actual not-for-profit, public sector, or industry collaborator. Teams integrate their knowledge of project manager, project support functions, and specialized sector knowledge to solve problems and set strategies. Specific recommendations are presented to managers and leaders, accompanied by a formal written report and presentation.

Expected outcomes and deliverables

For each Capstone project, students will deliver a standard set of project management deliverables, listed below. Samples of he project management deliverables are in the Project Templates section

  1. Project Charter: Addresses the Capstone activities, may also serve as a project deliverable
  2. Stakeholder Register: Describes the stakeholders, may also serve as a project deliverable
  3. Work Breakdown Structure (WBS): a visual outlining the activities on the project
  4. Schedule: a visual, showing milestones and dependencies
  5. Risk Register: not focused on student activities, tailored to the Capstone project products
  6. Budget: not focused on student activities, tailored to the products/outcome of the Capstone project deliverables
  7. Project Status Report: produced twice during the term, outlining variances
  8. Two project specific deliverables, as defined by the participating organization

Project Examples

Requirements

Project activities might include but are not limited to:

  • Justifying how the principal functions and practices of project management are integrated as a methodology for planning and execution of a successful project;
  • Developing a comprehensive project plan, including all appropriate sub-plans, to satisfy the project sponsor’s need;
  • Specifying the appropriate set of project controls required for the execution of the project;

In these projects, students research different companies and industries, and develop project artifacts that address the organization's specific problem / opportunity. The students have the chance to express their creativity and communication skills, working with a broad base of stakeholders both inside and out of the participating organization.

Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:

Provide an opportunity for students to present their work and receive feedback.

Provide a dedicated contact person who is available to answer periodic emails or phone/virtual calls over the duration of the project to address students’ questions.

Be available for a quick phone/virtual call with the instructor to initiate your relationship and confirm your scope is an appropriate fit for the course.

Provide relevant information/data as needed for the project.
